The Real Ruler

Know this key to marketing success before spending

Kids these days.

I read recently that most teenagers don’t know how to use a ruler or tape measure.

This is hard to even believe, because measuring is so important.

I can track the success of most things I do by measuring. From the calories on my dinner plate, to the length of a 2×4 I’m about to cut, to the actual miles per gallon my vehicle is getting.

Being able to measure things is so crucial to not just my random projects and hobbies, but to everyday success in business.

If you don’t have measurable goals, you are doomed to overspend – especially when it comes to paid marketing.

In marketing speak they’re often referred to as “Key Performance Indicators” (KPI).

Your marketing metrics (or KPI) will tell the story of success.

Examples include:

  • Ad impressions

  • Click through rate

  • Traffic to your website

  • Inbound leads

  • New sales

  • Overall revenue

  • Net profit

It’s best if the metrics you can track lead all the way to profit, and then you can just watch the bottom line on your Profit and Loss statement each month.

Time to get measuring.

Onward and upward,
