The P-Word
Don't say it out loud, or you might be be called names (like these)
For some people, “profit” is a dirty word.
You might even be embarrassed to admit that a business is profitable. It can become a taboo topic that’s discussed behind closed doors.
The word itself can conjure up images of industrialists dressed like the Monopoly man, twisting their mustaches while peering down on all of the common folk who are breaking their backs for him while he waits for his caviar to be served on fine china.
Being concerned with profit does not make you a Big Bad Capitalist. Profit is absolutely necessary in order for you to achieve your purpose in business.
Let that sink in: You cannot achieve your purpose in business if your business is not profitable.
A business without profit is a hobby.
Profit isn’t a good thing or a bad thing; it’s just a thing.
Just like money itself isn’t good or bad, but can be used for good or bad, the same goes for profit in a business.
Business owners have implemented abusive practices for millennia in the name of profit, but that does not mean that “profit” and “abuse” are necessarily correlated.
It means that it’s possible to use profit for abuse, just like it’s possible to use profit to create a better workplace, or to leave a legacy for your children, or to invest in your community.
It is what you make it to be.
Profit has potential.
Profit creates possibilities.
Profit fulfills purpose.
