Be The Oil

Your job as leader may not be what you think it is

Viscosity.

That was the word used in every motor oil TV commercial in the 1980s and 90s.

You don’t really see Valvoline, Pennzoil, Quaker State, STP, Castrol, or Mobil 1 commercials like you used to. I suppose only the few and the proud change their oil these days, so there’s no use advertising to the masses.

I loved those commercials though – showing the internals of an engine, and how their oil was better than the “other guys” at viscosity at high temperatures, ensuring a smooth operation.

That’s you, but in your business.

You’re the oil.

Observe your operations and look for areas of friction. Then reduce the friction.

Depending on how many moving parts you have in your business, this might take a day, or it might take a month. It takes what it takes.

Once you identify friction, then address areas where a simple and repeatable improvement would make a big impact on the operation of the “machine” of your business.

Prioritize the pinch points and tackle improvements one by one.

Take a step toward better profit by smoother operation.

Onward and upward,
